BREAST RECONSTRUCTION
It is a surgical procedure that restore the shape of the breast after mastectomy. Many types of breast reconstruction are actually available.
- Breast implants: usually silicon filled devices or saline water. They are placed at the same time of mastectomy, or later, in second stage after the use of tissue expander.
- Flaps: the surgeon uses a section of tissue from one over the body, and relocate it to create a new breast. The commonly used are abdominal flap, (TRAM), DIEP flap, back (latissimus dorsi flap).
- Free flap: vessels are disconnected and reattached on the chest ones.
- Nipple reconstruction: with skin graft or tattoo.
- Fat transfer: requires many sessions to reach the desired volume.
